There seems to be a Skills for Life course for just about every letter of the alphabet (unfortunately there is only for "Y". The list is endless but headings are:

  • Animal Husbandry
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Business Admin/Managerial
  • Communications/Language
  • Conservation
  • Construction/Health & Safety
  • Food & Drink
  • Health & Beauty/Dance & Theatre
  • Horticulture & Floristry
  • IT/Video/Photography
  • Land-based Skills/Mechanisation
  • Personal Development
  • Sport

The Skills for Life programme offers YFC members an opportunity to gain nationally recognised awards and discover hidden talents whilst still having fun – don’t think of it as training – a lot of the courses are already linked into the National competitions programme.

Members from Yorkshire have already received awards for attending the Academy weekend, for stockjudging at the Act-I-Vate weekend and awards are pending for the Drama competition held recently.

Of course as a Club or District you might decide that there is a particular course or skill that you would like to undertake from the extensive list available, if so decide what it is and get in touch with County Office and we can set the wheels in motion. Don’t forget this programme is driven by members for members and if there isn’t the right course for you I am sure National can sort it out!

Some examples of success stories from around the country:-

Following a Sheep Shearing course one YFC member went on to take the British Wool Marketing Board training. This enabled him to assist training others and now he is working abroad.

  • A Devon members completed a 6 week Flower Arranging course and went on to win at a local show, then Devon county Show and National Competitions Day.
  • A Dorset member used his new skills to build a milking parlour from scratch with the help of some willing members as labourers, whilst another member used his new found skills to turn a disused barn into holiday accommodation which provided diversification and business development for the family farm.

Go on – “go for it” – you might just enjoy yourselves in the process!
